How do I choose a bathroom fitter?

Short answer

See a finished bathroom and talk to its owner, check the company at Companies House, get the public liability insurance certificate in writing, confirm who certifies the electrics, and compare three quotes on one written specification. Distrust the cheapest quote and any request for a large upfront payment.

The single most revealing check is a completed job: photographs show tiling, but the owner tells you whether the programme held, the house was respected, and the snag list got finished. Any fitter proud of their work will arrange it. The paperwork checks take twenty minutes: Companies House for trading history, the insurance certificate (check the expiry and the sum), and the electrical registration — bathroom electrics are notifiable, so ask which scheme certifies theirs and expect a straight answer.

Quotes only compare if they price the same thing. Write the specification down — even a paragraph: 'strip out, move basin to window wall, walk-in shower where bath was, tile floor and wet walls, mid-range sanitaryware' — and give all three fitters the same text. The spread will still surprise you, but now it means something.

The red flags, honestly ranked: a big deposit before materials are even ordered; a price a third under the field (the gap lives in the tanking and certification you cannot see); no written anything; and 'we don't bother with building control for bathrooms' — which tells you exactly how the invisible work will be done.
