What questions should I ask a bathroom fitter?
Five that reveal everything: Who certifies the electrical work? What exactly is tanked, and do you flood-test wetrooms? What is the payment schedule against stages? Can I speak to a recent client? What happens when strip-out finds a problem? The answers separate professionals from optimists within minutes.
Each question has a right-shaped answer. Electrics: a named competent-person scheme and a certificate that arrives without you chasing — hesitation here predicts the whole job's paperwork. Tanking: specific zones described without prompting, and for wetrooms a flood test as standard; 'we always silicone it well' is the wrong answer. Payments: stages, not dates, with a retention at the end offered before you ask for it.
The recent-client question is less about whether they say yes — almost everyone says yes — than how fast a name materialises. A fitter finishing jobs people are pleased with has last month's client on the tip of their tongue. The strip-out question tests honesty about uncertainty: the right answer names a contingency and a process ('we price it, you approve it in writing before we proceed'), not a breezy 'never happens'.
And one question to ask yourself after the survey visit: did they measure, look under things, and ask about your hot-water system — or quote from the doorway? The quality of the questions a fitter asks you predicts the quality of everything that follows.
