What happens if something goes wrong after the job?

Short answer

A professional job comes with a written workmanship guarantee, manufacturer warranties on the products, and certificates for the notifiable work — and the common post-job issues (a settling silicone line, a dripping valve) are minor and fixed on a snag visit. Your protections: the written guarantee, any retained final payment, and Section 75 if you paid by card.

Distinguish the normal from the worrying. Normal in the first months: silicone lines settling as a house moves through seasons, a valve cartridge bedding in, grout hairlines at movement points — ten-minute fixes any decent fitter returns for without drama, which is exactly what the snagging retention exists to guarantee. Worrying: moisture appearing below or beside the bathroom, which needs a same-week response and is why the tanking questions mattered at the start.

Your paper protections, in order of usefulness: the written workmanship guarantee (ours is written, term stated, and survives because the company does — check any guarantee's issuer at Companies House); the electrical and building-regulations certificates (protect resale value); manufacturer warranties on valve, tray and sanitaryware (registered at handover, not left in the box); and Section 75 card protection on payments over £100, which puts the card issuer jointly on the hook.

If a dispute does harden with any trader: everything in writing from the first issue, photographs dated, an independent report if the sums are serious, and the small-claims track is designed for exactly this size of dispute. But the honest observation from inside the trade: the jobs that end there almost all telegraphed it at the start — the big deposit, the missing paperwork, the price too good. The twenty minutes of checks in 'how do I choose a fitter' are the real warranty.
